Demotivational posters parody the glossy motivational prints that covered office walls in the 1990s — a dramatic photo in a black frame, a big serif word like “PERSISTENCE”, and an earnest sentence underneath. Despair, Inc. flipped the formula in 1998 with its “Demotivators”, keeping the sincere corporate layout pixel-perfect but swapping the message for deadpan pessimism. By the mid-2000s, forum communities had turned the template into one of the internet’s first widespread image-macro formats, generating thousands of home-made posters about everything from video games to office life.

The format’s rules are strict, and that strictness is the joke: a pure black field, the photo inset behind a thin white double frame, an all-caps letter-spaced Times New Roman title, and one dry line below it in muted gray. Break the layout and it reads as a generic meme; keep it exact and even a photo of your cat asleep on a laptop becomes a solemn corporate statement.
